More Parts for Chapter 3

Below is a list of items that you can choose from. Most of these parts are listed above but some aren't, so you might like to add them to your order or order them separately. The "Continue Shopping" button in the shopping cart will bring you back here to the item you just selected. The items, below, marked with an asterisk * are NOT in the kit, above, but may be required if you don't already have them.

Notes:

Soldering iron

I've been soldering for 50 years and I disagree with the book statement: "The 15-watt size is desirable for the small-scale work you'll be doing, and greatly reduces the risk of damaging components by inflicting excess heat." In my experience it's best to use a hot iron, which, with practice, lets you make a joint quickly and efficiently, with less risk of a dry joint. I normally use a Weller iron with a number 8 (430°C) bit!

Solder

Tin-lead solder is much easier to use than lead-free and, provided that you don't swallow it or continually lick your fingers while handling it, will do you no harm. The number of lead atoms floating in the air during soldering is immeasurably small. The real danger is from the flux (which is usually more aggressive in lead-free solder). Avoid breathing flux fumes. If you are asthmatic, you should probably install an extractor fan to keep contaminated air moving away from you.

This oxidises quickly so you should keep it inside a sealed "ziplock" plastic bag, or similar, with as much air as possible sucked out. That way it should last for months instead of weeks, if you don't use it often. (Photo for illustration only.)
