Next week the Tour de France is in London and will pass through Bexley, Denise (cipollini photographs) and I will be there will you? I also thought you might like to know that I managed to shake the hand of Lance, I will die with this smile on my face.

I confess my ignorance of anything to do with sport! I always thought it took place in France. No, I won't be there.

I currently run a guesthouse and the course has enabled me to set up a satellite system on the premises feeding satellite to all 7 rooms. I can confidently say the course is worth every penny and has already paid for itself many times over! Thank you.

Questions

Hello Martin,

This letter may be a bit different from the norm for you but I would appreciate your advice and hopefully your help.

I have been trying to sell my Audio Visual and Satellite Installations business in Spain since January this year. Although I have had good response and a couple of offers, to be honest, none of the applicants have been very focused towards our industry and most want to simply buy and manage from the outside. This is not what I want, my business has a very personal feel and I would prefer an owner Engineer to take over.

As a regular visitor to your site and keen reader of your regular newsletters, it dawned on me a few days ago that you may be interested in helping me promote the sale (maybe even know someone who may want to buy). Until now I have had the business for sale on a standard business for sale website, this is attracting people but I would really prefer for the new owner of my business to have been in the industry and therefore have a desire to run things from within, and on-site with the end clients.

Please can you take 5 minutes to look at the following web-site:

On our forum:

I live in Ireland. I have a Sky HD box and a Sky SD box. The HD box has a Sky card suitable for Ireland. This means that it cannot receive ITV or Channel 5. It can receive BBC 1, 2, 3, 4 and Channel 4. The SD box has a FTV card from the UK and so can receive ITV and Channel 5. Is it possible to output a signal from the SD box to the HD Box so that the latter can record a programme (for example from ITV or Channel 5) from the SD Box? Is it true that from 01 July 2007, Sky will no longer require a subscription to enable the recording facility on a Sky HD box or a Sky+ box? In other words, a Sky+ box will be able to record programmes in the absence of any subscription to Sky?

No and no. Sky will allow Sky+ Digiboxes to record "for free" if you have a subscription. If you cancel your subscription, the recording facility will cost you £10 a month, but you must request it at the time of cancelling.

New Products

We are now able to supply the MTI Super, high gain low noise (0.2dB) LNB, which several people have asked about. Apparently this gives really good performance in certain locations.

Customers are finding more and more uses for our silicone grease. You can read about it here.

If you know of a product which we ought to stock, please let us know!

Happy Customers

HI, I purchased a large dish and quad lnb off your company two or three years ago. This has been fitted to a pole in my garden to overcome large trees that blocked the signal. I feed a sky plus box and a normal second box off the quad lnb.

For the last three to six months I have been completely loosing the signal for about an hour in the afternoons. I have now attached the dish to a substantial pole that is 4m in height to see if this improves the reception. This has doubled the height of the original dish. I have a good signal strength and signal quality, but again I lost the signal for an hour or so.

Do you think my lnb requires replacing or is it because I have some movement of the pole when it is windy. I cannot understand how the signal which is good goes to nothing.

Hope you can shed some light on my problem as it is driving me crazy. Photo attached.

Cheers for your help. Andy Banks.

Andy, as you live nearby, I'll come and have a look to see if there's anything obvious.

OK, you've trapped the cables on the support pole underneath the dish arm! You should check this out. Also, your dish is aiming at some trees. I don't think they are a problem but the smaller one, close by in your neighbour's garden, will definitely block the signal if it grows another foot.

However, the real clue is that you lose your signal at the hottest time of day. Next time it happens, try chucking a bucket of cold water over the LNB.

Martin,

Thanks for coming out last night and giving me invaluable advice. This afternoon I lost my signal at 1 o'clock and then again at 3 o'clock. On both occasions I poured water over the LNB and hey presto my signal returned stronger than ever. I have ordered another LNB from Satcure and hopefully this will keep me going another couple of years like the last one. (I guess it was on for about 30 months). Once again thanks for coming to my aid. Now, hopefully, I won't be driving my wife round the twist going on about my signal.

Cheers Andy B

Excellent. I do hope the LNB solves the problem. You could possibly keep it cooler by wrapping it in aluminium foil.

I was amused to see this "patented LNB cooling system" mentioned on a forum:

Martin

Martin,

Seeing your user's problem reported in News106 about losing reception in the hottest part of the day, I had a customer with a similar issue. It turned out to be a (probable) problem with the F connector. I think that what must have been happening was that the afternoon thermal expansion was causing the coax core to move just enough to cause connection problems (as shown by the BER/signal quality display). After remaking the F connection (screw-on) the problem went away & has not returned.

As we both know, connection problems are wickedly difficult to tie down, but this one was quite predictable, appearing most afternoons over 2 - 3 weeks before I nailed it. Clearly, this may have nothing to do with the news story, & I myself wondered about the cable trapping, but my experience may help.

All the best,

Russ
