Another month has gone by and we've had the excitement of The Concerts for Africa, Protest Marches, the London Olympics win, the G8 summit and the horror of the London bombs. We've also had some rather bad and some rather good weather. Curiously, judging by the orders (or lack of), very few people choose to install a dish or aerial system in sunshine; they always leave it until the most horrible weather occurs!

Anyway, to business. This month I have very little news but two interesting discount offers!

Dialler for Expats in Germany

David Parker is offering a low cost dialler for expats in Germany. The unit should work in other European countries, too, but has not yet been tested outside Germany. See his web site at http://www.click2freedom.com

Sky Dialers for Germany and Europe at trade prices. All items on the www.click2freedom.com homepage will be made available for satcure customers at a 20% discount. Please contact David by email (from his web site) for your discount login information. Be sure to mention "SatCure discount".

Shipping prices are inclusive until the end of July, after which shipping will cost £5 per item in Germany and £8 for other European countries..

Buy before end of July save 20% + PLUS.. up to £8 shipping per item.

This is a unique opportunity to buy at trade price. As such orders will be subject to a maximum of 10 units per email address per day.

The offer is valid until the end of July, at which time the login pages will be removed and the homepage pricing will retain its current pricing + a charge for shipping.

Panasonic TU-DSB30

I'm receiving frequent reports of "No signal", "lock-up" and "picture freeze". Nobody (none of the repairers with whom I have contact) are certain what the cause is, so my guess is bad software. As it's now quite an old model and not supported by the manufacturer, Sky may decide it's not worth supporting.

So the only answer I can suggest is to buy a new or used replacement. However, you could ask Michael if he thinks your fault is fixable:

DAT75 in loft

Apart from interference from my central heating my aerial set-up works very well in my loft and I'm very pleased. I'm thinking about a metal screen around the pipe. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you have any others?

It's unlikely that a metal flue pipe would carry any interference. But you could try grounding it. More likely the cable or aerial is picking up interference from adjacent mains wiring. This is explained in our "Freeview Bible". You don't mention the nature of the interference but it may be that your boiler thermostat requires a spike suppressor.

Hi Martin

The interference is momentary (say 0.5 seconds) and is always on vision, but sometimes on sound and vision.

I wonder if you can give me suppliers of "spike suppressors"? Would they be boiler-specific?

best regards

John

I can't advise on this. Not really my field. But you can get general purpose suppressors from companies like Farnell.

Hi Martin

You may be interested to know that fitting a supressor (supplied by the gas company but fitted by me) across the gas valve, and also earthing the given earth terminal on the gas valve which had never ever been earthed before, has totally eliminated the interference on my digital TV pictures. It cost me only my time (which is very cheap). It is a capacitor labelled 0.1uF 275VAC. It comes supplied with the piggy-back connectors attached and they are standard 0.25" size.

Many thanks

John

Thanks for the info. We can now supply these if anyone needs them.

Re: Returns Request from Ian Mansfield. order: SA17918051159

Hello there. We have now discovered that one end of the cable needs screwing on properly - it would have been nice if you could have mentioned that this would be the case, as your website gives the impression that the two ends are both crimped on. Unfortunately it's too late for the rubber boot now.

When I used the word 'inferior' to refer to the cable I was using before, I did not mean that it was damaged in any way, just that it was a cheaper, thin (but brand new) cable. I don't see how that could have damaged the connections on my box etc - I feel you tried to use that as an excuse for your own poor handiwork.

Despite the jolliness on your website and emails about caring when something goes wrong, I do not find myself wanting to buy anything from you again, as your attitude to my problem, and general customer service was not as promised.

Regards, Ian M

This concerns me greatly. Please tell me the URL of the page and quote the paragraph that gives you the impression that we supply crimped F connectors so that I can correct it immediately.

I'm also concerned that "one end of the cable needs screwing on properly". The method of construction is described here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm

There should, as it says, have been about 3mm of copper core protruding from the plug. If that was not so then I apologise unreservedly. All of our cables are hand made and some variation in quality is inevitable but they should all be perfectly usable. Our operator may have been in a hurry to get the order packed so it didn't miss the post, but that's no excuse.

I'll arrange to get a replacement rubber boot to you ASAP to replace the one you cut. Thank you for your feedback.
